AI operational intelligence transforming Belgian pharmacies.

How TGC Capital Partners is embedding AI-powered operational intelligence into Belgium’s independent pharmacy ecosystem alongside Datatopia - capital paired with named engineers and GTM operators on a written 24-month operating thesis.

The operating problem

Belgium has ~5,000 independent pharmacies. They are the unit of healthcare delivery closest to the patient, and they sit at a structural inflection. Dispensing margins have compressed. Pharmacy staffing has tightened across the country. Regulatory-reporting burden has grown year over year. The operational-software layer underneath these pharmacies has not kept pace - most pharmacies run on legacy point software with limited interoperability, manual inventory planning, and no operational intelligence in the daily workflow.

The opportunity Datatopia is solving for: a system of operational intelligence that embeds into the daily workflow of an independent pharmacy - demand forecasting against local prescription patterns, inventory optimisation against expiry and supplier lead-times, regulatory compliance automation, and staff-scheduling assistance - with the AI inference doing the heavy lifting on each of those surfaces.

Why operator-led growth equity is the right structure

Capital alone does not solve the binding constraints in this category. Three of them recur:

  1. Engineering throughput on a regulated-data product surface. The AI inference layer has to operate inside Belgian and EU healthcare data-residency requirements, with retrieval and decisioning behaviour that is auditable for regulators. This is engineering depth, not engineering volume.
  2. One-pharmacy-at-a-time enterprise sales. Independent pharmacies are operationally similar but commercially distinct - each has its own buying cycle, its own decision-maker, its own integration surface with existing pharmacy management systems. Sales is named-account enterprise motion at five-figure ACV, not volume SaaS.
  3. Cross-border regulatory scaffolding. The roadmap extends into adjacent Benelux markets and the wider European pharmacy ecosystem. Each jurisdiction has its own data-residency and dispensing-regulation posture. The regulatory scaffolding has to be built once and well, not bolted on per geography.

The engagement structure

The engagement fits TGC’s scaleup-catalyst model. A written 24-month operating thesis was jointly authored with the Datatopia founding team before the term sheet. A deployed team of engineers, GTM operators, and governance specialists reports into the Datatopia leadership structure (CTO, CRO, founder-CEO), not into TGC. Tranche releases are tied to milestones the founder helped define. The operating cadence is monthly operating reviews on top of the standard quarterly board cycle.

What the embedded team is working on

  • AI inference layer. Embedded engineers from the Gateway Group bench are working on the core AI inference architecture - demand forecasting against local prescription data, inventory optimisation under expiry and lead-time constraints, the decisioning surface for regulatory compliance reporting.
  • Pharmacy-management integration. Integration engineering with existing pharmacy management systems - the layer Datatopia’s software has to sit underneath to embed into the daily workflow rather than alongside it.
  • Enterprise GTM motion. Embedded GTM operators are working alongside the Datatopia commercial team on the named-account enterprise sales motion across Belgian pharmacy networks, with a structured weekly operating cadence.
  • Regulatory scaffolding. Governance specialists are building the data-residency and regulatory-compliance posture required for the move into the wider Benelux pharmacy ecosystem.

What success looks like

The 24-month operating thesis defines named output milestones rather than activity targets: a measurable lift in inventory turn at the pharmacies running the platform, regulatory-reporting overhead reduced to a fraction of pre-platform baselines, expansion of the customer footprint into adjacent Benelux markets, and a platform architecture mature enough to support an enterprise-grade buying committee in the next regulated geography. The TGC engagement is structurally accountable for these outcomes alongside the Datatopia founding team, not as a financing party.
